Approach
All instruments and skill levels are welcome.
The workshops will explore a wide range of the music and songs of the dance genres, including čoček, devetorka, lesnoto oro, pravo horo, and râčenica, that are popular at weddings and picnics throughout the Balkans.
Dance, music, and song, belong together. There will be some dancing in Eva’s singing workshops, some dancing and singing in Sergiu’s instrumental workshops, and some singing in Yves’ dancing workshops.
The material each teacher will cover will be different in each of the three workshop periods. No matter what your skill level, or your primary interest --, dance, instrumental music, or song -- you may take any workshop in any of the three periods. You do not have to stay with the same teacher for all three workshop sessions. In fact we encourage you to switch around; to, say, sing a song with Eva in period A, play its accompaniment with Sergiu in period B, and dance to it with Yves in period C.
The dance, instrumental music, and song workshops offered during the first two periods are designed for those whose primary interests are, respectively, dance, instrumental music, or song. You may try something other than your primary interest most readily in the third period, when the workshops are designed for those with little experience.
We also encourage you to bring percussion instruments to play and/or loan to others during the instrumental music workshops.
All participants are invited to play, sing, and/or dance the workshop repertoire during the evening dance party.
